It’s no secret that Washington State gets a lot of rain. Whether you’re in beautiful Seattle or off in the mountains near Chelan, you’ll get some good sunny days to enjoy your patio, and some not so sunny days. Even on cooler days, though, with some cover and a heater you can still enjoy the beautiful outdoors! Let’s talk patio heaters.

Understanding Patio Heating

When it comes to heating your patio, there are several options! Many of us enjoy a good old fashioned bonfire. A common alternative for porches are standing fire pits. These often use propane and are a fashionable, effective way to provide heat for your outdoor gathering. Other common choices include freestanding patio heaters like quartz tubes and mushroom style heaters. Alternatively, many prefer to have a more permanent option, like a wall or ceiling-mounted heater. Freestanding heaters are good, reasonably efficient choices for those on a budget, while mounted heaters are typically the most efficient and space-conscious option, but have a larger upfront cost. With both as good options, your biggest deciding factor will likely come down to aesthetics.

Maintaining Your Patio Heater

Your patio heater maintenance will largely depend on its fuel source. Electric, propane, and natural gas heaters each have their own set of needs. The best way to care for your patio heater is to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations! For propane and natural gas heaters, it’s important to cover and protect them against the wind and rain when not being used, as damage can potentially cause gas leaks. If it’s been a while since you’ve used them, give them a quick inspection for any damage! Electric heaters are also susceptible to damage. The wiring particularly can become corroded and is a primary cause of malfunctioning heaters. Have your heating system inspected if it’s been a while, follow your manufacturer recommendations, and protect your heater from the elements when not in use. Repairing or Replacing a Patio Heater

A patio heater or heating system is a decision that comes with a lot of freedom. Depending on your space and style, you have a variety of options! If your mounted heating system is not working properly it may be worth having an inspection done. However, freestanding units are likely more worth replacing than repairing.
